On September 11, 2017, a resident of Pitt County discovered oil in the soil around her home. Tests have proven there is a high level of silicates in the oil. This indicates volcanic activity.
Today that residents home sank into the soil 2-3 feet. The land is very loose and soft. This event was preceded by seismic activity which lasted about 10 minutes. The shaking was violent for a short time. The house rose and then started to sink as we were leaving. A next door neighbor has already vacated the area.
There is a seismologist in the county now, assessing the situation.
We recommend interested persons thinking on drilling there avoid moving into the county because the State is preventing drilling. Sink holes will likely occur with removal of the oil and we cannot afford to create a bigger problem.
